What to do in Alentejo
Discover Alentejo, a region full of contrasts
This is the largest region of Portugal, but it's not the size that gives it its strength. It's the people, it's the History, the heritage, the gastronomy and wines, the smells and landscapes. Alentejo means Beyond the Tejo, beyond the river that marks the “frontier”, it's Portalegre, Beja, Évora, mainland and atlantic, hinterland and coast. Alentejo is Alqueva, the largest artificial lake of Europe, it's UNESCO World Heritage (Évora and Elvas), it's one of the best coastlines of the world. It's cork, wine, olive oil, Arraiolos carpets, the Temple of Diana, Serra D’Ossa. It's the warmth of its people, the heat of the sun that seems to glow more fiercely here.
It's in the heart of North Alentejo, beating strongly alongside the damm that is its namesake. Montargil is a town and a lake, a paradise merely an hour by car from Lisbon, miles of distance from urban bustle, from hurry. It's a typical village of the Alentejo, with a hotel that sweeps in contemporaneity.
The suggestion is to let yourself be taken in time and space, tour the surroundings – by bike, on foot, along the marina or plains... Venture out! Over the water of the damm or on a horse ride. Visit the narrow streets and discover architectural vestiges of the eighteenth century, visit Mora River Museum and learn about some of the indigenous aquatic species in a place that is at the same entertaining and educational. Eat... migas (mashed moist seasoned bread), eggs, shark or tomato soup, encharcada (almond and egg pudding) or sericaia (baked custard with plums), river fish or pure Alentejano meat... Drink... To never ever forget.
49 berths with 24 fingers up to 7m long. The technical and practical features of Montargil Marina speak for themselves. With the most modern infrastructures, such as a covered area, parking for trailers and vehicles, water and electric power supply points, and a place for storage of material, it also has a Nautical Club for well spent hours of leisure. A restaurant with a terrace overlooking the damm and an infinite swimming pool of 25m captivate even those less enthusiastic. The best of the Earth and Water, for a delightful interaction with the elements.
